Allan J Hall has been fascinated by music, electronics, and synthesisers for as long as he can remember. His journey began at twelve, when he built his first guitar fuzz box. From there, a love of electronic music quickly followed — fuelled by countless hours listening to early Tangerine Dream, Pink Floyd, Vangelis and Kraftwerk. By sixteen, a Casio CZ-101 marked the start of a lifelong love affair with synthesisers, and soon Allan was building and modifying his own systems — first for himself, and then for fellow electronic musicians.
Allan’s curiosity and ambition have never been limited to music. Over the years, he has explored a wide range of industries and creative endeavours. He built and ran a successful fireplace business, later selling it to focus on property development, constructing multi-million-pound dream homes. Always seeking a new challenge, he even built and flew his own aircraft — a Europa kit plane. These experiences, diverse as they are, cultivated a rigorous attention to detail, a hands-on approach to problem-solving, and a relentless drive to create — all qualities that now inform his work at AJH Synth.
Before launching AJH Synth full-time, Allan spent five years as a service technician, repairing and modifying vintage synthesisers from Moog Music, ARP Instruments, Korg, Roland and others, while also undertaking professional audio design work. Prior to that, he designed and built boutique valve (tube) guitar amplifiers.
Despite these varied ventures, electronic music and analogue synthesis have always remained at the centre of Allan’s life. For decades, he has been building, modding, and performing on synth systems — even playing keyboards semi-professionally in several rock and tribute bands — but the real pinnacle of his journey came with AJH Synth. Here, he combines a deep knowledge of vintage circuits, a passion for musicality, and decades of hands-on technical experience to create Eurorack modules that capture the warmth, character, and playful spirit of classic synthesisers — often expanding their capabilities in the process.
Based near Durham in the North East of England, AJH Synth is now a small but passionate workshop where Allan and a dedicated team of synth enthusiasts continue to explore, experiment, and push the boundaries of analogue modular design. Every module, every system, is approached with the same care, curiosity, and love for sound that started when Allan first built that little fuzz box at twelve — a love that continues to inspire musicians around the world today.
